Pinterest Cleaning/Organizing Tips from RS Enrichment night

Awesome night, ladies! Here is the bread recipe Stan forgot to add to the recipe packet. If anyone has other natural yeast BREAD questions, email: stan@howellonline.org

Here are the other cleaning/organizing tips...

GREEN CLEANING RECIPES

MIRACLE LAUNDRY WHITENING

·         HOT HOT HOT water

·         1 cup of laundry detergent

·         1 cup powdered dish washer detergent

·         1 cup bleach

·         1/2 cup borax

After filling the washing machine with HOT water….I also dumped in a large-sized pot of water I had brought to a boil on the stove. I was looking for HOT HOT HOT water. Another thing to remember is to add the above ingredients to as small a load size as possible. You are looking for CONCENTRATED cleaning power, and the more water you have in the tub, the less concentrated it will be. Shoot for BARELY enough water to cover the article.Let soak for as long as you can stand it! :-) I managed to stay away from it for a couple of hours. Overnight would work too.

HOW TO STORE FRESH HERBS   (tipjunkie.com)
Freeze your herbs in ice cube trays. Chop up herbs and place into individual ice cube trays. Make sure you measure your herbs per ice cube. That way if a recipes calls for 1 TBS of fresh herbs, you’ll know how many ice cubes you need. Pour about 1/4 cup of water over every 1 cup of herbs. Then freeze. When you need to use herbs, just thaw out however much you need or want to use.

BAKING PAN CLEANER    (Remember, this only worked so-so for me, but feel free to try it!)

I put about 1/4 cup of baking soda in a small glass bowl and squirt in hydrogen peroxide until it makes a nice paste. Then I rub it on the offending dirt/stain/grease…whatever! I usually just use my fingers…but I also use a small sponge at times as well.

LEMONADE KOOL-AID AS DISHWASHER CLEANER
Clean lime deposits and iron stains inside the dishwasher by pouring a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and running the (empty) dishwasher.

SALT AS WREATH DUSTER
Place a wreath of pinecones or faux evergreen in a paper bag with a 1/4 cup of salt. Fold the top of the bag over and gently shake.

BAKING SODA AS DRAIN UNCLOGGER
To get your drain running again (without resorting to chemicals worthy of a hazmat suit) pour ½ cup soda, then ½ cup vinegar, down a clogged drain. Cover it with a wet cloth, wait 5 minutes, uncover, and flush with steaming-hot water.

HAIRSPRAY AS LIPSTICK REMOVER
If the fabric is machine washable, saturate the spot with hair spray, let it sit for 10 minutes, then dab with a damp cloth or sponge to remove. Launder as usual to wash out any residual stain and spray.

POWDERED LAUNDRY SOAP

1 c. borax
1 bar Fels Naptha, finely grated
1 c. washing soda
¼ c. oxyclean (optional)

1 T per load, 2 T for heavily soiled clothing

CARPET SPOT REMOVER
Just dap a bit of shaving cream on it. The cheapest shaving cream works the best. You don't want the fancy kinds with the lotion. Work it in with your fingers and let sit a minute or two. Then just wipe it up with a wet cloth. (If you have light carpet, use a light colored cloth.) Voila, spot GONE!

DEODORIZING DISCS
2 cups baking soda
1 – 2 cups distilled water (or you can boil your water for 10 minutes.)
Lavender essential oil (or whatever oil you choose. Citrus would be good too!)
Silicone mold or muffin pan

Add a 3 to 4 drops of essential oil to approximately 1/2 cup water. Pour the water/oil mixture into the baking soda and mix well. Continue to add water until you have a THICK paste. Divide the mixture into your molds or muffin tin cups. Let dry 24 to 48 hours until completely hardened. And they smell SO good! Each disk should last about a month in a diaper pail. Then, when you are ready to replace it, take the OLD disk and crumble it into a load of laundry to help deodorize there as well.

HOW TO CLEAN A MICROFIBER COUCH
Make sure you get a WHITE sponge and WHITE bristle brush so that there is no accidental color transfer onto the couch when you are scrubbing. (I used a light brown sponge because that's what we had on hand and it matched to color of our sofa; so you could go that route as well. )Pour the rubbing alcohol in the spray bottle and SATURATE the stained area. I know this seems counterintuitive, but rubbing alcohol evaporates much faster than water so it won't leave a water mark. Take your sponge and start scrubbing the area hard. You'll start to see the dirt coming off onto your sponge. If your sponge get's really dirty before you are finished, switch it out for a new one to avoid rubbing old dirt onto clean areas. Let the areas your sprayed dry. They will look darker than the rest of your couch and will feel kind of hard to the touch, but don't worry about it. That's what the bristle brush is for. Once the couch is COMPLETELY dry, take your bristle brush and with swirling motions, fluff the areas you cleaned.

Eliminate sticky residue from an iron. Run the hot iron (no steam) over plain paper sprinkled with salt.

  1. One more cleaning tip just discovered...
I bought a cute, new bag and then got a pen mark on it. Solution? Rubbing alcohol totally worked! Think the fabric is faux leather, btw. I hear Mr. Clean Magic Sticks also work the best.
